Video formats, without the jargon
Container, codec, resolution: three different things that affect your file.
The container is the envelope
MP4 and WebM describe containers. They organize video, audio and sometimes subtitles into one file. A file extension alone does not tell you exactly how its contents are encoded.
The codec compresses the picture
H.264, HEVC, VP9 and AV1 are examples of video codecs. Support depends on your browser, hardware and editing app. For an important delivery, test the exact file on the destination device rather than assuming support from its extension.
Resolution is only part of quality
A 1080p label describes frame dimensions, not the amount of visual detail preserved. Bitrate, compression settings and source quality matter too. Re-encoding cannot recover detail that has already been discarded. Keep your original export.
